Hobgoblin from Wychwood Brewery, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. When I first started working in a pub at 19, I had no idea about English Ales and even less desire to drink them. Even after the Craft Beer scene started to pull me in and get me trying new styles of beer, you would sooner see me order a diet tonic water than a pint from the hand pump. It wasn't until we went to visit family a year or so ago that my uncle offered me a beer and came back with this. Not wanting to be rude, I graciously accepted. Tentatively sipping it I started to realise what I'd been missing out on. Needless to say I was quite happy to see a bottle of this turn up amongst our personal possessions after Christmas! A Ruby Ale at 5.2%. Little bit chocolatey, smokey and fruity. Satisfying moderate bitterness with a slight smokiness. Komes Russian Imperial Stout from Browar Fortuna, Poland 🇵🇱. In foreign countries it's always interesting looking around supermarkets, especially the beer section. What I've noticed in Poland is that almost every "big" brewer has their own high-strength Porter (of which I've tried almost all by now, but hey, it was winter! 😂), but this made me think last time; "I really fancy a Stout!". Luckily this one came to the rescue, sitting on the edge of the shelf! An Imperial Stout at 12%. Smokey plum sweetness, Malty backbone and a touch of dark chocolate to give it a compensating bitterness. San Servolo Svijetla Pivo from Bujska Pivovara, Croatia 🇭🇷. During my time in Istria, I had more than a few beers from this brewer, but maybe only tried this one once. Never really grabbed my attention before, mainly because I prefer darker beers, but since I had the opportunity I thought I should give it a go! A Lager at 5.1%. Little bit hoppy with some light citrus and pine notes. Smooth drinking and a light bitter finish. Pilsweizer Grybów from Pilsweizer, Poland 🇵🇱. When we arrived in Poland, obviously I had a fair few souvenir beers I found along the way from Croatia so I was eager to drink one (after a 10 hour drive 😩). As luck would have it, I opened aho's parent's fridge to find a beer pre-chilled! I asked if it belonged to anyone (hoping for a no!) and was told it had been in the same spot where I left it back in May all this time 😂. Six months in the fridge will make any beer ready no!? A Pilsner with an ABV of 5.7%. Easy drinking with a subtle malty sweetness and a medium bitter finish.
