Boletus and parasol mushrooms at the vegetable market in Kraków. Went to get spring onions, raspberries and figs from the market in Dębniki yesterday, and I couldn’t help but ask the stall owner about these beautiful mushrooms they had there. We ended up having a little chat about mushroom picking, as it turned out he was a keen forager as well. Got myself a little gift, that is proudly occupying the corner of my kitchen table now and encouraging me to write. Saintpaulia, commonly known as African violet, is my grandma’s favourite houseplant. Or I’d think it is, as at some point there were at least two pots with them on every windowsill available in her house! With time, almost every member of our family had one, as Babcia used to grow new plants from a leaf of an older one, and share the seedlings or the very young plants that she grew, with friends and family. There was a bit of an African violet exchange going on in the 90s, in my village at least. People (mostly women) would request a cutting or a leaf of the houseplant that they saw at someone’s house (or an office) and wanted to have in their homes. The request was often granted, and even accompanied with advice about how to care for it. African violets were amongst the most popular, as they are easy to multiply: you take a healthy leaf of the plant you like, put it in water for few days or until you can see tiny, white roots on the end of the stalk, plant it in soil and hope it takes off. And it usually does! Brightening my kitchen table with this little wonder seemed just about right. Rosehip, domesticated. The preserve is now in jars, after hours of labour (@katebuffalo thanks again for rescuing the Mission Rosehip from total fiasco) and I can’t wait to taste it. Will have it for supper with beautiful challah bread from @zaczyn.piekarnia, the best bakery in Krakow (I think!). For now though, back to writing and editing the mushroom picking article I promised few days ago. Normal from Tektonik Kraft Pivovarna, Slovenia 🇸🇮. I have to be honest in saying that my expectations were pretty low after seeing the name of this beer (but then again maybe that was their plan?), but I was quite excited to see it came in a half litre bottle! A Pale Ale at 5.1%. Fruity, a little bit sour and some zingy citrus notes. Dry, bitter finish. Black IPA from Pulfer, Croatia 🇭🇷. On our day trip to Zagreb last year, a friend recommended one bar to head to if I was interested in beers (which indeed I am!). I tried a few beers before asking for a pint of the Porter they had, but once I sat down and started to drink it, it seemed very unlike any other Porter I'd tried 😂. So when I finished it, I asked for a taster of this beer, and it turned out that this was what I was given! Luckily it was a great beer so I had no need to return it, and I even managed to find a bottle of it the next day 😮 so here goes my second taste. A Black IPA at 6.9%! Roasted malt flavour but not too strong, Pine and citrus give it a fruity zing. Daintree from Fourpure Brewing Company v Tiny Rebel, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Like I said, it's a short holiday (leaving tomorrow 😫) so although there was just about enough time to meet with friends and family, finding the moment to sit with a beer and savour it was not so easy - so that's why I'm drinking this not much longer after the other on this fine Sunday afternoon. Also another gift I can't take with me! A Mango Smoothie IPA at 6%. Looks very much like mango juice, bit more consistency than your average IPA (but luckily not so much like mango juice 😂). Definitely a strong and sweet mango flavour but without overstepping the mark. Finish is bittersweet with a hint of passion fruit. Breakfast Club from Vocation Brewery v Yeastie Boys, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Back for a short holiday in England which means trying some old favourites and anything new I fancy. Luckily my brother took care of the new ones for me with this (and one more 😉). I think I can safely say that I've never wanted to try a beer so much just from looking at the can, and I don't even like blueberries 😅. A Breakfast Stout at 6.9%. Smooth and minimal fizz makes it creamy and enjoyable to drink. Sweet vanilla and mild coffee flavours with a tangy, slightly bitter finish of blueberries and blackberries. Hobgoblin from Wychwood Brewery, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. When I first started working in a pub at 19, I had no idea about English Ales and even less desire to drink them. Even after the Craft Beer scene started to pull me in and get me trying new styles of beer, you would sooner see me order a diet tonic water than a pint from the hand pump. It wasn't until we went to visit family a year or so ago that my uncle offered me a beer and came back with this. Not wanting to be rude, I graciously accepted. Tentatively sipping it I started to realise what I'd been missing out on. Needless to say I was quite happy to see a bottle of this turn up amongst our personal possessions after Christmas! A Ruby Ale at 5.2%. Little bit chocolatey, smokey and fruity. Satisfying moderate bitterness with a slight smokiness. Komes Russian Imperial Stout from Browar Fortuna, Poland 🇵🇱. In foreign countries it's always interesting looking around supermarkets, especially the beer section. What I've noticed in Poland is that almost every "big" brewer has their own high-strength Porter (of which I've tried almost all by now, but hey, it was winter! 😂), but this made me think last time; "I really fancy a Stout!". Luckily this one came to the rescue, sitting on the edge of the shelf! An Imperial Stout at 12%. Smokey plum sweetness, Malty backbone and a touch of dark chocolate to give it a compensating bitterness.
