Alboraya’s fields in the afternoon sun. In Valencian ‘huerto’ refers to someone’s small allotment, whereas ‘huerta’ to the fertile coastal plain around the city of Valencia. The ‘huerta’ has been used to grow vegetables and citrus fruits for centuries, at least since the Roman conquest. But the ‘huerta’ we know today, with its characteristic irrigation canals that turned Valencian countryside into farmers’ paradise, was created by the Arabs around 8th century. Their ingenious planning allowed to channel the waters of Turia River, build dams, canals and watermills and hence transform the swamps around Valencia into agricultural haven. A visit to Alboraya was our first day trip while in Valencia. Together with Jaume, our Spanish teacher, we set out to explore the fields, learn about chufa and try horchata - a drink I have been pretty keen to have a taste of. Before we had a chance to do any of these, however, we had a rather interesting encounter with a local pack of cats, lazily passing hours in the afternoon sun. If I remember correctly, there were at least 4 of them, chilling under potato plants. Pilsweizer Grybów from Pilsweizer, Poland 🇵🇱. When we arrived in Poland, obviously I had a fair few souvenir beers I found along the way from Croatia so I was eager to drink one (after a 10 hour drive 😩). As luck would have it, I opened aho's parent's fridge to find a beer pre-chilled! I asked if it belonged to anyone (hoping for a no!) and was told it had been in the same spot where I left it back in May all this time 😂. Six months in the fridge will make any beer ready no!? A Pilsner with an ABV of 5.7%. Easy drinking with a subtle malty sweetness and a medium bitter finish. San Servolo Tamno Pivo from Bujska Pivovara, Croatia 🇭🇷. As this brewery is the most local to the guesthouse we stayed in, as well as being the favoured brewery of our hosts, I can probably say I became quite familiar with their beers over the last autumn. This is definitely my favourite though! A Dark Lager at 5.6%. Smooth to drink (although can be a bit too bubbly sometimes) and not nearly as watery as most other similar style beers around. Lone Wolf from Reservoir Dogs, Slovenia 🇸🇮. After traveling through the countryside and mountains in Italy, Austria and Slovenia, we had a mini day trip to a city - Ljubljana. I was quite excited to see if they had any beer shops, and there was one! With 30 minutes to check it out and only €10 to spare, I managed to get four beers for my troubles 😉. Was hard to pull myself away from that shop actually 😂. An IPA at 6.6%. Juicy tropical fruit flavours which contrast well with the slightly dry character. Delíra La Weiss from Italian Craft Brewery, Italy 🇮🇹. As our time in Istria drew to a finish (along with our finances 😂), so too did my collection of beers 😩. Luckily our hosts @bolara60 bought me a little gift on a short trip to Trieste, and like I always say - a free beer is always a good beer 😉. A Wheat Beer at 5.5%. Probably drinking it a lot less lively than it should be (fizzed over when I opened!). A mix of orange and slightly floral flavours.
