Here’s what happened today: pierogi with bilberries for lunch. Anna and Matt, our hosts @bolara60, bought some bilberries at the market in Buje recently. I can’t possibly convey in words, how touched I was by this gesture. I promised Anna that I’ll make sure to turn them into something delicious. So here they are, Polish pierogi with bilberries, in Istria. It’s becoming a trends, it seems, that I am making pierogi in every country I stay in for longer than a few days! 🙈 Anyway, thanks again guys for this wonderful gift! Plum and frangipne tart, second attempt. I knew it’ll be better than the first! The thing with baking in a new place, is that, well, everything is different. The flour is different, the flavour of butter, the fruit, even the oven you have to familiarise yourself with. My oven back in the UK was ancient: I had to guess the temperature (the numbers, once probably there, faded and disappeared over the years), there was no light inside (stopped working and we were never bothered to fix it), and there was no fan. Baking was a true adventure, a guessing game. The transition to a modern oven, in fully working order as well, meant a venture into the unknown. When it rains, it’s pretty, too! Took this photo two weeks ago, when it rained everyday for a few days, the storms were producing fireworks in the night sky, and I could almost hear the mushroom growing in the surrounding forests. Re-reading the classic. Herbert’s way with words is so captivating, that I always find myself wanting to visit places, he so gracefully and colourfully describes. Modern cities, ancient ruins, forgotten history, and mythical characters - all come to life in his prose, so much that one almost feels as if he was there, with him: admiring a sunset in Siena, exploring ruins of Paestum, and finding Van Gogh in Arles. To travel with Herbert’s book in hand, visit the museums, squares and cathedrals with him - that’s the dream. For now, though, the sun is setting over the hills surrounding @bolara60, the chickens are getting ready for bed, mosquitos are eating me alive, and it’s quiet, so quiet. Peaceful. Cisza Nocna from Browar Jabłonowo, Poland 🇵🇱. My first half of the day was fairly uneventful, apart from slicing my finger open, which I may have made slightly too big a deal of 😂. After my miraculous recovery, it was time to help the neighbours with their grape harvest. Not too bad a job, but as they have had a pretty good year, it meant each plant had a surprising amount of grapes to pick! Once again, it's time to fit in a beer in my spare 30 mins 😁. A Dark Lager at 6.3%. Fairly sweet so you don't notice the strength too much. Notes of fruit cake and also pretty malty. Close up of a Grasshopper. Starting to enjoy the company of most insects around here. There is a constant buzz of bees, wasps and other various flying creatures. Ants marching somewhat aimlessly, but without hesitation, on top of the table under the tree. The occasional shield bug that flies at speed into you as if out of control. First Light from Devil's Peak Brewing Company, South Africa 🇿🇦. As lunch seemed to be slightly delayed due to the coinciding preparation of ajvar in the kitchen, I took the opportunity to work through one more beer from the seemingly never ending supply I brought with me. A Golden Ale with a 4.5% ABV. Good balance of hops and malts to deliver a fairly standard, but satisfying, beer taste. Some pine notes are also present. Walking through the streets of Buzet. A couple weekends ago, we went to a local festival one evening in search for the biggest truffle omelette. It was surprisingly tasty 😮 but there was not much else going on that night. We returned the following day to the other part of the event which was happening in the part of town on top of the hill, which is where we saw this beautifully arranged washing line 😂. Skrimshander from Hopdaemon Brewery, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. The main cleaning for today is now complete! It may have taken less time if the spiders were not so hyperactive, with webs reappearing faster than the chickens can lay eggs. If it was the other way around we'd be living the dream I guess! Time for a little rest, and what better way to do so than with a cold beer 😎. An IPA at 4.5%. Surprisingly fruity with some spicy notes to tone down the sweetness. The unintended walnut harvest. About a week ago we sat down for lunch under the walnut tree as usual. As we were discussing the difference between the healthy looking tree a few metres down the hill and the slightly dry one above us, we noticed some walnuts were ready for picking. Obviously I had little experience of this, so I may have picked a few that weren't quite ready, then stubbornly tried to take off the green husk.
